"In Volume IX, "Carbohydrate Metabolism," enzymes involved in metabolic reactions between disaccharides and pyruvate, together with appropriate procedures and methods for preparing substrates, have been covered. In contrast to earlier volumes, the organization groups together enzymes of like reaction type. Within these large divisions, the organization follows metabolic sequences. In recognition of the importance of subtle differences in properties of an enzyme, preparations of the same enzyme from several sources have been included. Where applicable, additional contributions were secured which deal with enzymes of importance in medical diagnosis. The format of these chapters departs from the typical in that description of assay procedures used in clinical laboratories, together with general information and interpretation of results, are presented."
