"The methods selected for coverage have been grouped in the conventional fashion. They progress from amino acid analysis, through chain separation and sequence determination, to procedures for chemical modification and the investigation of conformational changes. This progression would be the one most logically followed in an idealized investigation of structure-function relationships. Inasmuch as the methods of protein chemistry are still in a state of rapid evolution, decisions about what to include and not to include were made not only on the basis of the demonstrated value of a method but from an estimation of its potential as well. For this reason a number of contributions have been included about procedures, which, though employed in a relatively restricted sense, show promise of wider applicability. In this respect, therefore, the volume differs somewhat from its predecessors."
